Diary Entry 8: Housekeeping
Date: 2026-03-05
The Task
After seven diary entries documenting the creation of 12 specs, 37 UX documents, 16 ADRs, and a system architecture document, the documentation about the documentation had drifted out of sync. Time to clean house.
What We Found
A documentation audit revealed several inconsistencies:
Stale references:
README.mdstill said the project was "moving into UX design" — it's been complete for daysCLAUDE.mdproject structure didn't show the UX subdirectories or diary folderdiary/README.mdwas missing entries 6 and 7
Scrambled numbering:
design/ux/00-overview.mdhad entries 25-31 completely out of order: 28, 27, 26, 31, 30, 29, 25 instead of 25, 26, 27, 28, 29, 30, 31- This was likely a merge artifact from a previous editing session
Counts that needed verification:
- "37 UX documents" — correct (the 37 items in the reading order; the overview itself is the 38th file)
- "16 ADRs" — correct (001-016;
ux-decisions.mdis supplementary) - "21 wireframes" — correct
- "236 screens" — correct
- "7 diary entries" — correct at the time, now 8
The Fixes
-
diary/README.md — Added entries 6 (Resolving the Open Questions) and 7 (Reconciling the Architecture)
-
README.md — Updated status to "complete", added UX overview to reading order, expanded project structure tree
-
CLAUDE.md — Updated phase to "complete" with summary of completed work, added full UX hierarchy to project structure
-
design/ux/00-overview.md — Fixed the scrambled wireframe numbering. Replaced the entire corrupted block (entries 25-31) with correctly ordered entries.
-
.claude/MEMORY.md — Created a memory file to persist project state across sessions
Lessons
Documentation rots faster than code. Every major change to the project created a small inconsistency somewhere. Specs said one thing, architecture said another, READMEs said a third. Without a deliberate housekeeping pass, these drift apart.
Numbering is fragile. The overview's scrambled numbers were probably caused by a large block edit that reordered entries without updating their numbers. Markdown numbered lists should auto-number, but when you're using explicit numbers for cross-referencing (as we were), a single bad edit cascades.
Counts are surprisingly useful. "12 specs, 37 UX docs, 16 ADRs, 236 screens" became a consistency check. When a file said "15 ADRs" or "38 UX docs," it was a signal to investigate.
Memory files are overhead, but useful overhead. Creating .claude/MEMORY.md adds one more file to maintain, but it provides a single source of truth for project state that survives session boundaries.
Current State
The project is now ready for implementation:
| Artifact | Count | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Spec documents | 12 | Complete |
| UX documents | 37 | Complete |
| Wireframes | 21 | Complete |
| Screens | 236 | Specified |
| ADRs | 16 | Complete |
| Architecture | 1 | Complete |
| Diary entries | 8 | Current |
All documentation is consistent. All counts match. All cross-references are valid.
The next step is implementation.
